How to convert HTML to Markdown (3 steps)
Example: HTML → Markdown
A page snippet containing a script tag — the thing that makes copy-pasted HTML dangerous.
<article><h1>Release notes</h1><p>Ship <strong>fast</strong>, stay <em>safe</em> — by <a href="https://example.com">the team</a>.</p><ul><li>one</li><li>two</li></ul><script>alert(1)</script><table><tr><th>k</th><th>v</th></tr><tr><td>a</td><td>b</td></tr></table></article>Formatted rendering of the real Markdown output (source below).

# Release notes
Ship **fast**, stay *safe* — by [the team](https://example.com).
- one
- two
| k | v |
| --- | --- |
| a | b |
What converts natively (and what doesn't)
| Feature | Result in the Markdown |
|---|---|
| Headings h1–h6 | Native — Become # through ###### |
| Bold / italic / strikethrough | Native — **strong**, *em*, ~~del~~ |
| Links | Native — [text](url); javascript:, data: and file: URLs are stripped |
| Bulleted and numbered lists | Native — Including nesting |
| Tables | Native — Converted to GFM pipe tables |
| Code blocks and inline code | Native — Fenced, keeping the language where present |
| Images | Native — Kept as references — never fetched, so nothing downloads behind your back |
| Scripts, styles, iframes, forms | Not supported — Stripped before conversion; every removed tag type is listed |
| Colspan / rowspan | Partial — Spans expand over the Markdown grid — alignment preserved, covered cells empty (GFM has no merge syntax) |
Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.
What this tool does not do
- No: Fetching URLs — paste the page content instead; the tool never downloads websites
- No: Extracting CSS classes, inline styles or <meta> information
- No: Preserving colspan/rowspan layouts
- No: Content that only exists behind page JavaScript
What people use HTML to Markdown for
Frequently asked questions
Is the HTML sanitized?
Yes. Scripts, forms, iframes and tracking markup are removed before anything is processed — output is inert and clean.
Can I convert a URL?
Not in this tool — for privacy and security it doesn't fetch websites. Paste the page content or HTML source instead.
Is the Markdown output safe to commit or publish?
Yes. Conversion is sanitize-first: scripts, styles, iframes, forms and event-handler attributes are removed before any conversion happens, and everything that was removed is reported.
Can I paste from Gmail or Word directly?
Yes — paste the content or its HTML source. Apps attach their own clipboard markup; converting that works the same way, and the tracker pixels most newsletters carry get stripped.
What happens to images?
They become standard Markdown references . The image is never downloaded or re-hosted — the URL simply travels with your Markdown.
Can I convert a website by URL?
Deliberately not — fetch-on-behalf-of-user becomes a privacy liability and an abuse vector. Open the page, copy the content or source, and paste it here.
Is the output GitHub-flavored Markdown?
Yes for the structural elements: headings, emphasis, lists, tables and fenced code blocks all come out in GFM syntax that renders on GitHub, GitLab and most Markdown editors.
What gets stripped from pasted web content?
Scripts, styles, iframes, forms, event-handler attributes and unsafe URL schemes (javascript:, data:, file:) are removed before conversion. Everything that was removed is reported, so clean output is a claim you can check.
