What converts natively (and what doesn't)

FeatureResult in the Markdown table
Paste from Excel / Google SheetsNative — Tab-separated cells flow straight into the table
Delimiter auto-detectionNative — Tabs, semicolons, commas and pipes are detected for you
Existing Markdown → reformatNative — Paste a Markdown table to normalise alignment and escaping
Pipe escapingNative — Literal | inside cells is escaped so the structure survives
Column alignmentNative — Preserved on Markdown input; pasted cells auto-right-align all-numeric columns (engine v0.4.0)
Merged cellsNot supported — Markdown has no merged cells — repeat the value or restructure instead

Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.

What this tool does not do

  • No: Merged cells, cell colours and formulas — Markdown tables carry text only
  • No: Sorting or reordering rows and columns
  • No: Reading .csv / .xlsx files directly — paste the cells, or use the Excel and CSV converters

What people use Markdown Table Generator for

README tables without the fiddlingCopy cells out of Excel or Google Sheets, paste, and get an aligned GFM table for your README or docs — pipe escaping and alignment handled for you.
Fix tables copied out of wikis and chatsPaste a half-broken Markdown table and the normalizer rebuilds clean, fully-piped output with escaped pipes — the structure survives wherever it is pasted next.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste from Excel?

Yes. Paste tab-separated cells copied straight from Excel or Google Sheets and they flow into an aligned table. Tabs, semicolons, commas and pipes are detected automatically, so no delimiter setup is needed.

Are pipes in my content escaped?

Yes — literal pipe characters are escaped automatically so your table structure stays intact.

How do I make a Markdown table from Excel?

Select the cells in Excel, copy, then paste into the generator — tab-separated paste is detected automatically and converted into an aligned GFM table you can copy into your README or document.

Can Markdown tables have merged cells?

No — the format has no cell spanning. Either repeat the value in each row, or keep the merged data in its own column; the converter will not invent structure.

Why does my table break in one specific app?

Some apps disagree about leading/trailing pipes or blank header rows. The generator always emits fully-piped tables with a separator row — the most portable form. The GFM table guide covers the edge cases.

Does the generator sort or aggregate my data?

No. It is a formatter, not a spreadsheet: it structures and escapes the cells you pasted, in the order you pasted them.

How do I control column alignment in the output?

Alignment is preserved when you paste an existing Markdown table, and columns whose cells are all numeric are auto-right-aligned on paste (engine v0.4.0). You can also edit the separator row by hand — colons set left, right or center alignment.

Can I generate tables for GitHub READMEs?

Yes — the output is GitHub-flavored Markdown: fully piped rows with a separator line, the most portable table form. It renders correctly on GitHub, GitLab and in documentation generators.
