What converts natively (and what doesn't)

FeatureResult in the Plain text
Emphasis markersNative — **bold**, *em* and ~~strike~~ unwrap to their text — punctuation untouched
LinksNative — “label (url)” by default, or label only — your choice
List markersNative — Kept (or stripped on request), nested lists indented
Task listsNative — [x] and [ ] markers in the output
Code blocksNative — Verbatim, or dropped on request
TablesNative — Tab-aligned rows, no pipe scaffolding
BlockquotesNative — A “> ” prefix so provenance survives
FootnotesNative — [n] with the note text in place
ImagesPartial — Only the alt text survives

Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.

What this tool does not do

  • No: Images — only alt text survives
  • No: Styling the output — it is plain text by definition
  • No: Batch conversion of many files

What people use Markdown to Plain Text for

AI output for plain-text systemsStrip ChatGPT or Claude Markdown before pasting into plain-text email, SMS, legacy forms or terminals — punctuation and code survive where regex strippers mangle them.
Notes into readable plain textTurn Markdown notes into clean text for diffs, logs or archives — tables come out tab-aligned and footnotes stay attached to their text.

Frequently asked questions

Will it corrupt text containing asterisks or underscores?

No — that is the reason this tool exists. It parses the document structure first, so literal asterisks in your content are left alone and only real Markdown markers are removed.

How much formatting survives?

Structure survives, styling doesn't: headings become plain lines, list items keep their markers and line breaks, tables come out as tab-aligned rows without the pipe scaffolding, and bold or italic words keep their words without the markers.

What happens to footnotes and tables?

Footnotes come through as [n] followed by their note text, and tables become tab-aligned rows without the pipe scaffolding — readable in any text editor.

Why not just a regex stripper?

Regex strippers mangle code, escaped characters and nested emphasis. This tool walks the parsed document, so code stays verbatim and content punctuation is never mistaken for Markdown.

Can I keep or hide link URLs?

Your choice: by default links become “label (url)”, and there is an option to output just the label text.

Does it process several files at once?

One document at a time today — batch conversion is on the roadmap. Documents run in a second or two anyway, so converting a handful of files is rarely the bottleneck it sounds like.

How do I remove Markdown from ChatGPT output?

Paste the response in — the structure-aware stripper removes the **, #, - and table scaffolding while keeping the words, URLs and code intact. Links become label followed by the URL by default; there is an option to keep just the label.

Are link URLs kept or removed?

Your choice. By default a link becomes its label followed by the URL in parentheses, so the reference survives; a one-click option outputs just the label when the URL would be noise.
