How to convert a Markdown table to JSON (3 steps)
Full workflow: the complete GFM table reference
Example: Markdown → JSON
Numbers, booleans and a leading-zero ID in one table.
| Product | Units | In stock? |
|---|---:|:---:|
| Wrench | 42 | true |
| Bolt | 00123 | false |
The real JSON output — exactly what “Copy output” gives you.
[
{
"Product": "Wrench",
"Units": 42,
"In stock?": true
},
{
"Product": "Bolt",
"Units": "00123",
"In stock?": false
}
]What converts natively (and what doesn't)
| Feature | Result in the JSON |
|---|---|
| GFM pipe tables | Native — One array of objects per table; the header row becomes the keys |
| Type inference | Native — 42 and 3.14 become numbers, true/false become booleans — with an off switch |
| Leading zeros | Native — 00123 stays a string, so IDs and ZIP codes survive |
| Multiple tables | Native — One array entry per table, in document order |
| Line breaks in cells | Native — Become \n inside the JSON strings |
| Escaped pipes in cells | Native — Un-escaped automatically in the output |
| Duplicate header names | Native — Later duplicates are suffixed _2, _3 … so keys stay unique |
| Non-table content | Not supported — Ignored — and the tool tells you how much was ignored |
Full element-by-element ground truth, with test dates: format support.
What this tool does not do
- No: Nested objects or arrays from a single table
- No: NDJSON or YAML output
- No: Anything that is not a pipe table — surrounding prose is ignored (and reported)
What people use Markdown to JSON for
Frequently asked questions
Which Markdown maps to JSON?
GFM pipe tables convert: the header row becomes the object keys and every data row becomes one object in the output array. Multiple tables convert to an array of tables.
Are numbers and booleans converted?
Yes, by default: cells like 42, 3.14, true and false become real JSON numbers and booleans. Values with leading zeros (like 00123) stay strings so IDs and ZIP codes survive. You can turn inference off to keep everything as text.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
What about formatting inside cells?
Bold, code and links come through as plain text; line breaks in cells become \n in the JSON strings; pipes are unescaped automatically.
What happens to the non-table parts of my document?
They are ignored — this tool converts tables only — and the fidelity note tells you how many non-table blocks were skipped, so nothing vanishes silently.
Is NDJSON supported?
Not yet. The output is one JSON document: an array of objects, or an array of arrays when your input contains multiple tables.
Can I turn type inference off?
Yes — the toolbar toggle keeps every cell as a text value, which is what you want for ZIP codes, phone numbers and product codes.
Can I convert ChatGPT tables to JSON with this?
Yes — AI assistants emit tables as GFM Markdown. Paste the response here and the header row becomes the JSON keys; enable type inference for numbers and booleans, or switch it off to keep IDs and ZIP codes as strings.
What happens to duplicate column names?
Later duplicates are suffixed _2, _3 and so on, so every JSON object keeps unique keys — the output stays valid instead of silently overwriting values.
